Make Do and Mend

It's always important to reuse, recycle and repair (watch out for our upcycled shop coming soon which embraces just this idea), and as we know this was just as important in the 1950s as it is now.  I shared our 1970s paisley dress in the shop with you recently as my favourite item but I feel bad I did not mention this cute nylon stocking repair kit, as it is another item I absolutely adore for different reasons.  It is so loved it has been used on various of our marketing materials.

I love it for so many reasons, many of which connect to my love of history.  The packaging is just so unusual as it plays on the rising popularity of the television in a clever marketing tool; you can almost see that this is exactly how women of the era may have spent their evenings- darning and watching their new television set.  It also reminds us of the fact that although the 1950s has a rosy glow to it, they were only just coming out of rationing and that to throw away stockings or tights just because of a hole was consider ridiculous and even wrong- so nylon repair kits were always available.  And the final reason I love it?  Because of how elegant she looks in the classic circle skirt!

Find this and other nylon repair kits in the shop now:
